In February 1862, Abraham Lincoln’s eleven-year-old son dies, and the president visits the crypt at night. Saunders tells it through a chorus of ghosts stuck between worlds, interleaved with historical fragments, and the fractured form is the point: grief as a thing assembled from many voices that will not agree.
