Barack Obama served as the 44th President of the United States from 2009 to 2017, the first African American to hold the office, after representing Illinois in the US Senate. He is also a writer of unusual seriousness, the author of Dreams from My Father, The Audacity of Hope and A Promised Land. Since his White House years he has kept up an annual ritual of publishing what he has been reading, and those lists carry real weight: a mention from Obama routinely sends a literary novel or a work of reported nonfiction onto bestseller lists, and the range of them, fiction, history, economics and memoir, reflects a reader with catholic taste rather than a politician signalling one.
