Lady Tremaine

The Cinderella story handed to the stepmother, following the woman before the title: two marriages, two daughters, and the narrowing options of a widow with no money and no standing. Hochhauser keeps the familiar beats but reorders the sympathy, and the retelling works because it does not soften her so much as explain the arithmetic she was doing.
