Isola

Based on the real Marguerite de la Rocque, a young French noblewoman abandoned on an island off Quebec in the 1540s after a shipboard affair, and one of the few who survived such a marooning. Goodman follows her from a controlled childhood as a ward to the raw practicalities of staying alive alone. The survival is gripping, but the sharper subject is a woman whose property and person were never hers to begin with.
