Our Missing Hearts

Celeste Ng · 2022

In a near-future America that removes children from disloyal parents, a boy goes looking for his exiled poet mother.

In a near-future America governed by laws that punish anything deemed un-American, children are removed from parents judged disloyal, and twelve-year-old Bird sets out to find the poet mother who left. Ng writes the authoritarianism as bureaucratic and familiar rather than spectacular, with libraries and librarians as the quiet resistance. The anti-Asian scapegoating at its centre is drawn straight from the recent past.

I absolutely loved catching up with Celeste to talk about her thought-provoking, heart-wrenching novel.
