In 1817 Edinburgh, Hazel wants to be a surgeon in a city where women are not admitted to the anatomy theatre, so she studies in secret and buys her knowledge from Jack, a resurrection man who supplies bodies to the schools. Schwartz writes the period grime with relish and builds toward something odder than a romance. Good on the gap between medicine as a gentleman’s profession and the trade in corpses holding it up.
