Fable

Abandoned on a barren island at fourteen by her father, a powerful trader, Fable has survived four years by dredging gems and trusting nobody. When she buys passage off the island she enters a world of crews, debts and shifting loyalties where her name is a liability. Young writes the sea trade convincingly and keeps the plot moving, and the pleasure is in a heroine whose competence is hard-won rather than assumed.
