Untamed

Doyle’s memoir turns on meeting the woman who became her wife while still married to a man, and the dismantling that followed. She writes against the training that teaches women to be agreeable, to distrust their own wanting, and to call self-abandonment love. The chapters are short and aphoristic, built for underlining, and the cheetah on the opening page has become shorthand for the whole argument: a wild animal taught to be tame still knows.
