Based on the Depression-era Packhorse Librarians of Kentucky, women who rode books into the Appalachian mountains under a WPA programme. Moyes follows an English bride stifled by her new marriage who joins the route and finds the work, and the women doing it, the first thing that is genuinely hers. There is a mining company, a trial and a good deal of hardship, but the durable subject is female friendship and what reading did for isolated households.
