The Cactus
A rigidly self-sufficient woman at forty-five faces a contested will and an unplanned pregnancy in the same week.
Susan Green has arranged her life to admit nobody: a flat run to her exact standards, a relationship on strictly her terms, no dependents. Then her mother dies, her brother contests the will and she discovers she is pregnant at forty-five. Haywood writes her as prickly rather than quirky, which is the point, and the pleasure is watching a woman who is usually right about the facts turn out to be wrong about people.
