In 1930s colonial Malaya, a dancehall girl acquires a severed finger and a houseboy is sent to return a missing body part to its owner’s grave, and the two errands converge. Choo braids Chinese numerology, Confucian virtues and the local legend of men who become tigers into what is part mystery, part ghost story, part coming of age. The period detail is precise and the supernatural is handled with a light, unsettling touch.
