The Light We Lost

Jill Santopolo · 2017

Two students meet on September 11th, and spend thirteen years learning that loving each other and living their lives may not be compatible.

Lucy and Gabe meet as Columbia students on the morning of September 11th, and the day shapes what they each decide to do with their lives, which turns out to be incompatible. The novel follows thirteen years of meeting, parting and returning, addressed throughout in the second person to the man himself. Santopolo is interested in the specific ache of a relationship that never resolved, and in choices between love and vocation that cannot both be honoured.

This book is all about different kinds of love – the kind that engulfs you like a wildfire and the kind that keeps you warm like a hearth fire.
