Lucy and Gabe meet as Columbia students on the morning of September 11th, and the day shapes what they each decide to do with their lives, which turns out to be incompatible. The novel follows thirteen years of meeting, parting and returning, addressed throughout in the second person to the man himself. Santopolo is interested in the specific ache of a relationship that never resolved, and in choices between love and vocation that cannot both be honoured.
