A Brief History of Time
From the Big Bang to Black Holes
Hawking set out to explain the universe with no maths, just the ideas, and made cosmology a bestseller
Hawking set out to explain where the universe came from and where it is going to readers with no physics, and largely succeeded: the book sold in the millions and sat on bestseller lists for years. It moves from the Big Bang through black holes to the nature of time itself, keeping to one self-imposed rule, that every idea be conveyed in words rather than equations. It made cosmology a subject ordinary readers felt they could hold.
