Into Thin Air

A Personal Account of the Mt. Everest Disaster

Jon Krakauer · 1997

Krakauer summited Everest the day a storm killed eight climbers, and wrote this trying to work out how it happened

Krakauer joined a guided expedition to Everest in 1996 on a magazine assignment, and reached the summit hours before a storm trapped climbers high on the mountain and killed eight of them. He wrote this soon after, partly as reporting and partly to make sense of his own part in it. The result is a hard look at how ambition, commerce and thin air combined into disaster.
