Paul Kalanithi was a neurosurgeon in the final year of a decade of training, on the edge of the career he had built toward, when he was diagnosed with stage IV lung cancer. He wrote this in the time he had left, turning the clinical eye he had used on patients onto his own dying. It is short, unsentimental and concerned with a single question: what makes a life worth living when you know it is ending.
