With the Old Breed

At Peleliu and Okinawa

E.B. Sledge · 1981

A mortarman at Peleliu and Okinawa, writing without a shred of the gloss usually applied to that war

Sledge enlisted as a Marine mortarman and fought at Peleliu and Okinawa, two of the worst battles of the Pacific war, then wrote this from notes kept inside a pocket Bible. He describes the filth, the exhaustion and the casual brutality without arranging any of it into meaning. It became a primary source for historians and for Band of Brothers, largely because he refuses to make the experience presentable.
