Marjane Satrapi grew up in Tehran as the Islamic revolution took hold, and drew her childhood in stark black and white: bombs, veils, forbidden records, and a fiercely loving family. The second half follows her exile to Europe as a teenager and an uneasy return. Funny, angry and humane, it made the graphic memoir a serious form. Emma Watson chose it for Our Shared Shelf in June 2016.
