Uwem Akpan, a Jesuit priest from Nigeria, wrote this collection of stories set across contemporary Africa, each narrated by or centered on a child. From a Kenyan family’s slide into desperation to the horrors of ethnic and religious violence, the young narrators witness cruelty they only partly understand. Unflinching and deeply humane, the stories force readers to see catastrophe through innocent eyes.
