Drowning Ruth

Christina Schwarz’s debut is set on a Wisconsin farm just after World War I. When Mathilda drowns beneath the ice of the family’s lake, her troubled sister Amanda takes charge of Mathilda’s small daughter, Ruth, and of a secret about that night. Moving between past and present and among several narrators, the novel slowly uncovers what really happened, in a tense story of jealousy and buried guilt.
