The Complete Stories of Leonora Carrington
The surrealist painter's short fiction gathered in a single volume for the centennial of her birth.
Leonora Carrington, a British and Mexican surrealist painter and novelist, spent most of her adult life in Mexico City and wrote short fiction throughout it. The Dorothy publishing project collected the stories in 2017, a hundred years after her birth, with an introduction by Kathryn Davis. They are macabre and satirical, with gorgeous tableaus and roguish comedy. Jeff VanderMeer calls Carrington essential to twentieth-century non-realist fiction.

Carrington is essential to the history and evolution of 20th-century non-realist fiction. Stories like "The Debutante" and "White Rabbits" are strange and timeless and conjure up the universality of fairy tales while being thoroughly modern.
