The Adventures of Augie March
Bellow's picaresque novel follows a Chicago boy through jobs, loves and schemes from the Depression to the war.
Saul Bellow published this picaresque novel in 1953, and it won the 1954 National Book Award for Fiction. Augie March grows up poor in Chicago during the Great Depression, then drifts through jobs, women, homes and schemes, including a trip to Mexico to hunt lizards with an eagle, before joining the merchant navy. Abraham Verghese read all of Bellow’s books in the last two years, and this one displaced Humboldt’s Gift as his favorite.

I came away even more in awe of his timeless and highly original genius. The Adventures of Augie March displaced Humboldt's Gift as my favorite.
