A Prayer for Owen Meany

John Irving · 2012

John Irving's novel of a small boy with a strange voice who believes he is God's instrument.

Published in 1989, this is John Irving’s seventh novel. It follows John Wheelwright and his closest friend Owen Meany as they grow up in a small New Hampshire town in the 1950s and 1960s. Owen has an underdeveloped larynx and a high-pitched voice, and he is convinced that he is God’s instrument and works toward the fate he has prophesied for himself. Abraham Verghese says it and Garp show the most wear on his shelves.

Abraham Verghese

Physician and Novelist

Of those, The World According to Garp and A Prayer for Owen Meany showed the most wear. I can still recall the profound experience of first reading those two novels, years before I started writing.
