Nomadland
Surviving America in the Twenty-First Century
Reporting on older Americans who took to vans and RVs after the Great Recession to chase seasonal work.
Jessica Bruder follows older Americans who, after the Great Recession, adopted a vandwelling life and drove around the country in search of seasonal work. The book grew out of a Harper’s cover story, was a New York Times Notable Book and won the Ryszard Kapuściński Award. Chloé Zhao’s 2020 film adaptation won the Academy Award for Best Picture. Louise Erdrich calls it an important book and knows the sugar beet harvest it describes from her hometown.

This is an important book. Bruder writes about economic refugees who downsize from regular houses into minivans, downsize from regular jobs with benefits into utter uncertainty.
