A Hero of Our Time
Lermontov's Russian novel of a restless, cynical officer, here in a Northwestern University Press paperback.
Mikhail Lermontov wrote the book in 1839, published it in 1840 and revised it in 1841. It centres on Pechorin, a Byronic hero who is both sensitive and cynical, and it is noted for its descriptions of the Caucasus. The novel belongs to the tradition of the superfluous man. Gospodinov read it seven times at sixteen, and says its non-linear telling left a mark on his own novels.

I was also shocked by the way the story was told. It was the first time I'd encountered such a nonlinear composition and, looking at my novels today, it must have left quite an impression on me.
