Binti
Nnedi Okorafor's Hugo and Nebula winning novella about a Himba girl who leaves Earth for an intergalactic university, from Tor.com.
Binti is the first member of the Himba people from Earth to win a place at Oomza Uni, an intergalactic university. Her transport ship is hijacked on the way, and she finds she can talk to the Meduse, long-standing enemies of humans. Tor.com published the novella in 2015. Karin Tidbeck reads it as a coming-of-age story and a first contact story about ending cycles of violence.

It’s a coming-of-age story, but it’s also a first contact story, where you sort of solve problems by communicating.
