The Laughing Policeman

Maj Sjöwall and Per Wahlöö · 2009

The fourth Martin Beck mystery by Maj Sjöwall and Per Wahlöö, translated by Alan Blair, in the Vintage Crime paperback.

Maj Sjöwall and Per Wahlöö published this novel in Sweden in 1968 as Den skrattande polisen, and it won the 1971 Edgar Award for Best Novel. The story follows Martin Beck and many other policemen working on one case. Anders Roslund grew up reading the series and says it showed writers how to join a gripping plot to political awareness. He re-read this book to write a foreword and found the plot timeless.
