Pedro Páramo
Juan Rulfo's novel of a man who travels to the ghost town of Comala to find his father, in Margaret Sayers Peden's translation.
Pedro Páramo, published in 1955, tells of Juan Preciado, who promises his dying mother to find his father in Comala and meets a town of spectral voices. It met a cold reception at the start, later became widely acclaimed, and influenced Gabriel García Márquez. Ave Barrera calls Comala a powerful mythical universe of abandonment and loss, and says she and Rulfo come from the same place. Grove Press published Margaret Sayers Peden’s translation.
