Shyness and Dignity
Dag Solstad's 1994 novel about a schoolteacher in crisis, translated by Sverre Lyngstad and published by Graywolf Press in 2006.
Shyness and Dignity is a novel by the Norwegian writer Dag Solstad, published in Norwegian in 1994 and in English in 2006. Its protagonist is a teacher named Elias, whose crisis peaks when his students show no interest in his lecture on Ibsen’s The Wild Duck. Roy Jacobsen calls it a lament, and both satire and not satire. Sverre Lyngstad translated this 112-page Graywolf edition.
