Leg over Leg
Volumes One and Two
Humphrey Davies's English translation of Volumes One and Two of Ahmad Faris al-Shidyaq's 1855 Arabic work Leg over Leg, from the Library of Arabic Literature.
Leg over Leg was originally published in Arabic in Paris in 1855. It details the life of the Fariyaq, the author’s alter ego, and comments on intellectual and social issues. Humphrey Davies’s translation for the Library of Arabic Literature appeared in 2014, in four volumes in the bilingual edition and two books in the English paperback. This edition holds Volumes One and Two. Mathias Énard calls the whole work a mix of epic novel, travelogue, political encyclopaedia, autobiography and Arabic dictionary.

It’s ironic, clever, always funny, it’s unique. Such a book teaches you that everything is possible if you are totally free, if you can free your mind from clichés and existing images of what a novel should be.
