No Longer Human
Osamu Dazai's 1948 novel of a troubled man who hides behind a mask of jocularity, a classic of postwar Japanese literature.
No Longer Human is a 1948 novel by Osamu Dazai about a man unable to reveal his true self to others. He keeps up a front of hollow jocularity before turning to alcohol and drugs. It was published one month after Dazai’s suicide at the age of 38 and is considered a classic of postwar Japanese literature. Rie Qudan says that if she had to name a single pick from her five, it would be this one, because it makes readers think they might write something too.
