Jim Harrison

A woman goes home to Nebraska and the family history that stretches back to the destruction of the Plains Indians.

At forty-five, Dalva has lived a life of lovers and adventures, but from her home on the California coast she still longs for the son she gave up for adoption years before. Jim Harrison’s 1988 novel follows her journey back to her family in Nebraska, to the half-Sioux lover of her youth and to a pioneering great-grandfather whose journals record the destruction of the Plains Indians, in a story that runs from the Civil War to Wounded Knee and Vietnam.

Another gem, this 1988 novel is set in the world of Native American rights and wrongs and loss and foundlings. The description of the land is gorgeous.
