King Rat
Prisoners of war struggle to survive in a Japanese camp in Singapore, in James Clavell's first novel.
James Clavell’s 1962 debut novel is set in a Japanese prisoner-of-war camp in Singapore during the Second World War, where American, Australian, British, Dutch and New Zealand prisoners struggle to survive. Clavell was himself a prisoner at Changi, where the novel takes place, and one of its three main characters, Peter Marlowe, is based on him. It was the first published book of his Asian Saga.

I found a copy of King Rat on a bookshelf and it saved me. Historical fiction then became my favorite genre.
