Patti Smith's memoir of her friendship with Robert Mapplethorpe and their young lives in New York.
Patti Smith’s 2010 memoir is the story of her friendship with the artist Robert Mapplethorpe, the man who changed her life with his love, friendship and genius. It moves through the New York of their youth, from Max’s Kansas City and the Hotel Chelsea to the bookstores where she worked. Smith said she wrote it to keep a promise she made to Mapplethorpe on his deathbed.

I had the great pleasure of interviewing Patti Smith recently at the Tribeca Film Festival. If you have any doubts that the punk pioneer is also one of the greatest living American poets, this book will put them to rest.
