Between 1915 and 1970, almost six million Black Americans left the South for cities in the North and West in search of a better life. Isabel Wilkerson, a Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist, tells the story of that Great Migration through the lives of the people who made it, drawing on interviews with more than a thousand of them. The 2010 book won the National Book Critics Circle Award.

The whole time I was reading Wilkerson's book, subtitled The Epic Story of America's Great Migration, my mind was filled with mental pictures. The scene-setting, the dialogue, the character development...I still cannot believe that this award-winning work is nonfiction.
