Theo Decker is thirteen when he survives a terrorist attack at the Metropolitan Museum of Art that kills his mother, and he comes away with Carel Fabritius’s painting The Goldfinch. Abandoned by his father, he is taken in by a wealthy friend’s family on Park Avenue. Donna Tartt’s novel follows the dramatic changes in his life from there, with the painting never far from the story. It won the 2014 Pulitzer Prize for Fiction.
