The Diary of Virginia Woolf
Volume One, 1915-1919
The first volume of Virginia Woolf's diary, begun during the First World War, in which a novelist examines her days, her friends and her work.
Virginia Woolf kept a diary from 1915 until shortly before her death in 1941, and it was published in five volumes edited by Anne Olivier Bell. This first volume covers 1915 to 1919, the years of the First World War and its aftermath, when Woolf and her husband Leonard founded the Hogarth Press. Candid, funny and searching, the diary records her friendships, her reading and her doubts about her own writing.

One of the greatest travelers of the mind, Virginia Woolf was always asking questions of herself and her writing. Why should she be "so divinely happy one day, so jaded the next?" These volumes are shot through with excoriating honesty, as she pushes the boundaries of self-examination to try to get at the truth of her talent and her place in the world.
