The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy
Seconds before Earth is demolished to make way for a hyperspace bypass, Arthur Dent is rescued by a friend who turns out to be from another planet.
Douglas Adams’s 1979 novel began life as a BBC radio comedy. It follows Arthur Dent, the only man to survive the destruction of Earth, as he roams the galaxy with Ford Prefect, a researcher for an irreverent electronic encyclopedia called The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy. Absurd, quick and endlessly quotable, it sold 250,000 copies in its first three months and was the first of five novels Adams wrote in the series.

This was one of the first books that made me understand it was okay for literature to be silly and funny and stupid and hilarious. I assume that this life-altering experience at age 10 or 11 still shows in my writing today.
