The Battle for Paradise
Puerto Rico Takes On the Disaster Capitalists
After Hurricane Maria, Puerto Ricans and wealthy newcomers fight over how to rebuild the island, in Klein's short report on disaster capitalism.
In this short 2018 book, Naomi Klein reports from Puerto Rico in the months after Hurricane Maria. She describes a struggle over the island’s future between Puerto Ricans pressing for a just, locally led recovery and ultrarich newcomers, nicknamed Puertopians, who see the devastation as an opportunity. It extends the argument of The Shock Doctrine to a single place, showing how a disaster can be used to push through changes that residents did not choose.
