Thomas Love Peacock’s satirical novel of 1817. Its hero, Sir Oran Haut-ton, is an orangutan who is given a baronetcy and stands for Parliament, and the story mocks rotten boroughs, slavery and the political fashions of the day. In one debate, Mr Forester argues against wasting food while others go hungry, and Mr Fax replies with the ideas of Malthus.
