Atomised

Michel Houellebecq

Two half-brothers, one a scientist and one a sensualist, adrift in the loneliness of modern France.

Michel Houellebecq’s novel about two half-brothers abandoned by their hippy mother. Michel is a withdrawn molecular biologist and Bruno a restless, sex-obsessed teacher, and their lives in late twentieth-century France become a bleak portrait of loneliness and consumer society. The book caused a scandal in France. It is translated by Frank Wynne and was published in America as The Elementary Particles.

Atomised is an important book, if only for its determination to break taboos – the hatred of women of both Bruno and Michel is apparent – but it is not important for its portrayal of brotherhood.
