Kidnapped
A cheated heir, a kidnapping at sea and a flight across the Highlands with a Jacobite outlaw.
Robert Louis Stevenson’s 1886 adventure. Young David Balfour is cheated of his inheritance by his miserly uncle and kidnapped onto a ship bound for the Carolinas. After a shipwreck he joins Alan Breck Stewart, a Jacobite on the run, and the two flee across the Scottish Highlands after a political murder. This Puffin Classics edition is introduced by Alexander McCall Smith.

Being Scottish, it’s one I can read again and again. I think the difference between the Lowland Scot and the Highlander is really brought out between Alan Breck and David Balfour. It’s very well written, very well done – and I think Robert Louis Stevenson has great charm.
