The Franchise Affair
A schoolgirl accuses two women of kidnapping her, and a quiet solicitor sets out to prove her wrong.
Josephine Tey’s 1948 mystery about Robert Blair, a country solicitor asked to help two women, a mother and daughter, who are accused by a teenage girl of kidnapping her and holding her in their attic. The evidence seems damning and the town turns against them. Based loosely on an eighteenth-century case, it is less a whodunit than a study of rumour and prejudice.

This book is just so well crafted. Everything seems to be building up against the two women, that it looks as if they really did kidnap this girl, and keep her locked in the attic – and how on earth are they going to get out of it? It’s just very, very well done.
