W. Averell Harriman was Roosevelt’s envoy to Churchill and then ambassador to Moscow, present at Tehran, Yalta and Potsdam, and one of the very few Americans who dealt directly with both Churchill and Stalin through the war. Written with the journalist Elie Abel and drawing on Harriman’s own papers, this is the record of those meetings from inside the room, including his growing conviction that the postwar settlement was going wrong.

The book is based on extensive use of Harriman’s notes after all the conferences he attended, which was most of them. It’s based on his notes after his meetings with Churchill, after his meetings with Roosevelt and after his meetings in the Kremlin with Stalin—which were many and extensive, even before he was American ambassador to Moscow.
