The Safekeep
Yael van der Wouden’s first novel, set in the Dutch countryside in 1961. Isabel lives alone in the house her family took during the war and guards it obsessively. When her brother leaves his girlfriend Eva there for a summer, the two women move from mutual loathing to something else, and the question of who the house belonged to before 1943 becomes impossible to keep closed. Shortlisted for the Booker Prize.

It’s set in Holland in the 1960s, and it’s about this pretty unhappy woman who lives in a house. Her brother’s girlfriend comes to stay with her. It’s really about the relationship between the two women, and also about how history rises up unbidden and knocks your life aside. It’s very well written. I think it will be a classic. It’s short as well!
