A short manifesto arguing that the world economy needs a shared ethical framework, and that one already exists in the values common to the major religious and humanist traditions. Hans Küng had spent decades on the Global Ethic project, which produced the 1993 Declaration Toward a Global Ethic; here he and his co-authors turn it on business, setting out principles of humanity, reciprocity, non-violence, justice, honesty and mutual respect as obligations for firms rather than aspirations. Published in a single volume with the German and English texts side by side, with a foreword by Jeffrey Sachs.

What Küng has done, with a lot of colleagues and building on a lifetime of work where he has studied all the major religions, is to put forward the proposition that during the last 20 years at the core of all these great religions, despite their frequent conflicts, there is actually a common set of values which can be the basis for a true global ethic.
