History of the Peloponnesian War
The Landmark Thucydides
Thucydides on the war between Athens and Sparta, and on why states do what they do — in the Landmark edition with maps and appendices.
Thucydides’ account of the war between Athens and Sparta, in the Richard Crawley translation, edited by Robert B. Strassler with the apparatus the text has always needed: maps on nearly every spread, running marginal summaries keyed to date and place, an index that works, and appendices by leading scholars on Athenian government, Spartan society, hoplite warfare and the trireme. The standard reading edition for anyone approaching the History outside a classics department.

Reading Thucydides was just a magical experience because of the way he attends to causation. I love the attention he gives to supplying the reader with all manner of possible explanations before going for the one that he prefers. He has an almost surgical precision in the way he weighs up one factor against another. He is one of the most original historians.
