Lu Wenfu’s novella follows Zhu Ziye, a Suzhou gourmet whose devotion to food survives the revolution, the collectivisations and the Cultural Revolution, told by a narrator who despises him. Published in 1983, it is read as one of the sharpest satires of the period.
