Herodotus set out to record why the Greeks and Persians went to war, and produced along the way the first work of history in the European tradition, full of digressions, hearsay carefully labelled as such, and an eye for how chance and character move events. The Landmark edition adds maps, appendices and a running chronology.

I think they could expect to learn a lot about the ancient world, the Greeks and, to a lesser extent, the Persians, but they could also learn a fair amount about how history happens – the interplay of individuals, personalities and larger forces like economics, geography, technology and, of course, chance.
