The Histories

The Landmark Herodotus

Herodotus

Herodotus on the Greek and Persian wars, and on how history happens — in the Landmark edition with maps and appendices.

Herodotus set out to record why the Greeks and Persians went to war, and produced along the way the first work of history in the European tradition, full of digressions, hearsay carefully labelled as such, and an eye for how chance and character move events. The Landmark edition adds maps, appendices and a running chronology.
