Gourevitch went to Rwanda after the 1994 genocide and built this book from what survivors, killers and bystanders told him. The title comes from a letter written by Tutsi pastors to their church president, warning that they would be killed the next day. He traces how the killing was organised, how the world declined to name it, and what was left behind, in reporting that reads as history rather than dispatch.

This book examines the darkest side of human beings. As the mother of many children, including seven sons I realise the importance of bringing up my sons to find peaceful resolutions to conflict – the reality is that it is men who are the violent perpetrators. This killing component is very likely responsible for the survival of the human species over many, many centuries.
