Wilson turns sociobiology on our own species, asking what in human behaviour is inherited.
Wilson had applied evolutionary biology to ants and then to animal societies; here he turns it on our own species, asking which human universals, among them aggression, sex, altruism and religion, are shaped by inheritance. Published in 1978, it won the Pulitzer Prize and drew sustained attack from critics who read sociobiology as determinism.

When I was selecting this book it was a bit of a struggle, because I am a big Ed Wilson fan. I have met him and had a fascinating two-hour conversation with him. I have read about 10 books of his, so I had to struggle to choose because there were a number of great candidates.
